At any given moment, no matter where you are, there are hundreds of things around you that are interesting and worth documenting. This is what is written on the back of the book ‘How to be an explorer of the world’. A book that encourages you to be creative. I was already a huge fan of the book ‘Wreck this journal’ from Keri Smith (a must have). The books are a little comparable. But Explorer of the world challenges you to document everything. I’m very curious about the assignments, I’ll pick them randomly and see how far my creativity and imagination goes.

IMG_1147

What did it teach me?

I’m a big spender. And I know that from myself. And I know that’s not a very convenient habit when you are a student for the first year and you live by yourself for the first year. My mom tells me for already over a year that I need to record what I spend. Because then it will be easier to save money. Because I have this problem that after I get my payment my money disappears in 2 weeks. So when I opened the book and it fell on this assignment I started to laugh a little. Because I heard my mom tell me that I needed to to this.

IMG_1150

This assignment thought me exactly what my mom was telling me. Record your payments! Because I only did I it for one day. But I was a little shocked because most of the things I bought, except for the food… I need to eat, that day where not necessary… or I could have bought them the next month. From now on I’m keeping a little book with me to write it all down. To help create some logic in my chaos of money.

THE HYPERLOOP

These days we are all in a hurry. We want to move as fast as we can. There are many traffic jams every day. And many people running on the streets trying to grab a taxi. And the trains are as full as they can be. The goal of every transport company is to let their consumers travel as fast an as far as they can. But until now it’s still with a lot of limits. But of course the one and only Elon Musk came up with an idea. The Hyperloop.

pod-in-dock-4a-without-artefact_1455132767.jpg

What is it?

Elon Musk is the founder of Tesla and now also of The Hyperloop. The Hyperloop is a transport system where you travel via pods above ground, under the ground or under the sea. It looks a little bit like a train but then way more futuristic and way faster. To take you to another place as fast as possible the pods can go more than 500 miles per hour (1220 km per hour). The pods go through a tube instead of following a rail. There are a view advantages and there are a few problems that may occur. A few advantages are that the pods can’t crash, they are cheaper to build than a normal American railway, it’s faster then any transport you have ever used and it is energy efficient. The Hyperloop will generate more power than it consumes. Some possible problems according to the critics are that the experience could be fritting and there are still some logistical questions. The system was introduced on paper by Tesla and SpaceX CEO, the made the plans an open source so that everyone could develop the system. Since then they announced an open competition every year to stimulate the developing of the pods. Specially for university students and independent engineering teams to design and build the best Hyperloop pod. According to Elon Musk this will be the fifth way of transporting ourselves, we already know the train, car, plain, boat and now also the Hyperloop.

“people are exited about it and it’s really begun to capture people’s imaginations.” Elon Musk

Why is it cool?

This is something you only saw in the animation movies or series on TV at Disney channel for example. It’s super mega futuristic. And what is special about this new way of transport that they have invited students to join a competition to make the best design for the pods. In this way you get very innovative co-creation between students and companies. This is also interesting because there is no system that is the same. There are some still some bumps in the road. Mostly structural and safety directed. They say it’s a very ecologic system to fur fill the needs in the future. Because the Hyperloop generates more power than it consumes it’s a very sustainable innovation for the sustainable cities of the future. It acts like a power generator.

#10 ONE THING

At any given moment, no matter where you are, there are hundreds of things around you that are interesting and worth documenting. This is what is written on the back of the book ‘How to be an explorer of the world’. A book that encourages you to be creative. I was already a huge fan of the book ‘Wreck this journal’ from Keri Smith (a must have). The books are a little comparable. But Explorer of the world challenges you to document everything. What did it teach me?

The object I chose was a coconut. I found it in the grocery store while I was doing assignment #41 Found faces. The first thing I saw was that the coconut had a funny face. It looked a little bit like a fish. It remembered me of my childhood. My mom sometimes bought a coconut, but at that time I didn’t like the taste so much. But know I love it. That made it a little easier to look at a coconut for 15 minutes… 15 minutes!!! I’m that kind of person that is not that good in concentrating for a long time and who gets bored pretty fast. So staring at one thing for 15 minutes was really difficult. But it thought me that the longer you look the thing you thought was one thing becomes more things. My coconut started looking like a fish. I even saw the fins at a sudden moment.

#59 HOW TO WANDER AIMLESSLY

At any given moment, no matter where you are, there are hundreds of things around you that are interesting and worth documenting. This is what is written on the back of the book ‘How to be an explorer of the world’. A book that encourages you to be creative. I was already a huge fan of the book ‘Wreck this journal’ from Keri Smith (a must have). The books are a little comparable. But Explorer of the world challenges you to document everything. I’m very curious about the assignments, I’ll pick them randomly and see how far my creativity and imagination goes.

What did it teach me?

It felt a little strange in the beginning… I was packing my bag and I didn’t know what to pack because I didn’t know where I was heading. Sometimes I’m a little bit controlling. I need to know where we go so I can prepare everything.

IMG_1112

I decided to take my walk in my hometown Nuenen. I started at my house. It felt very unnatural to do the exact opposite of what I wanted to do. When I wanted to go right, I had to go left. It gave me a very strange feeling. But when I started to let it go, I noticed that I let the control go a little. During my walk I started thinking. About everything. Normally I avoid those thoughts. But know because I was walking alone, at that time I already arrived in the small woods of Nuenen, I didn’t have a choice. And during my conflict with myself if I had to turn right when I wanted to go left or the other way around. When I turned around to walk back I realised that this simple walk turned out to be a very useful time to think. I think I will start doing this more often. Take some time for myself, taking a little walk.

JUST TAKE IT WITH YOU

Are you always on the move? And you’re not at home that much anymore? But you still want to take as much as you can with you wherever you go? Or you don’t have a home or stuff? Would there be a solution for that? For the people who need to move a lot or just can’t afford an expensive apartment. Because in the USA only there are living almost 3.5 million people on the streets. And singles now outnumber married people in America. Jeff Wilson, environmental science professor at the Huston-Tilloston University came to the rescue.

What is it?

It’s a tiny, cheap, smart apartment called Kasita. And the best thing is you can take it wherever you go. How it works is the glass and steel box can slide into a metal frame that squeezes into a building. You need or want to move? Just push the button on the app. You will be picked up by a truck, it will slide you out of the building, drive you to an empty space in another building and place your tiny house. There is no need for packing. Everything can stay inside. He started working with an industrial designer because he wanted to avoid expected solutions you would get with an architect. They wanted a few things it had to be low-rent even in the middle of the city, it had to be mobile, allow short term leases and let people live alone instead of roommates. The apartment will be about 30% bigger than a shipping container. The houses are mostly made for single living people with a cat for example.

3051862-inline-s-2-this-tiny-cheap-apartment.png

Kasita-home-concept_ideesdebiz.fr_.jpg

Why is it cool?

The tiny houses are inspired by tiny-house living. “Professor Dumpster,” aka Jeff Wilson founder of the tiny houses tried living in a dumpster for a year. After 10 months he was sick of it.  He saw an opportunity to rethink housing. Something else like any micro-apartment or tiny home that had ever existed. The house is multifunctional. Your bed slides out from under the kitchen. In the wall are tiles pull out to allow different configurations of products. You could take a tile and hang a mirror or a TV. What makes the apartment even cooler is that there has been used a lot of technology. You can tell the glass to blend for privacy or ask for the morning news. The tiny houses fit with the trend sustainable cities. Because the houses run on solar power and you can move them wherever you want.

3051862-inline-s-7-this-tiny-cheap-apartment

There is no need to build more and more houses if you can just pick up your own and move a city further. For the future this will be very useful. One day or another the earth will get too crowded. And we need to put people somewhere. With these tiny houses we don’t need to build more and more houses if people want to move, they just move to another rack. Also people who cannot afford a house can now easier get a tiny home. Because in the USA only there are living almost 3.5 million people on the streets and that’s not necessary.

“Let’s imagine you’re in San Fransisco, you get on Kasita app, you find the rack you want to move to in Austin, you click move, we come along, pull you out of the rack, put you on the truck, move you to Austin, and plug you in.” Wislon says. How cool would that be?

SHIT IT BROKE…

Imagine that you’re having sex and then your partner looks you in your eyes, and says the three words you never want to hear while your having sex. “The condom broke.” And then the waiting game begins. In 2007 there was a survey. A hundred college students where asked about their sex lives over three months of time. The outcome, man and women where having more unprotected sex because it was more pleasurable then when using a condom. In 2010 45% of men and 63% of women reported not using a condom. There are multiple consequences of not using a condom. 16 million girls between 15 and 19 years give birth each year. Imagine that the whole Netherlands is stuffed with pregnant teens.

What is it?

Swedish intimacy company LELO is the company that tries preventing situations like this from happening. It’s called the HEX condom and it looks pretty ordinary. But when you come closer you notice that there are some details that are not comparable with a normal condom. The condom has a hexagonal patterned honeycomb lattice into the material. The normal material that is used for so many years is just medical rubber. It breaks easily and it slips. And it reduces sensitivity. People connect a normal condom with less pleasure and less connection. “It’s kind of a shame that in 2016, we are still using a product that is more or less identical to what it was hundred years ago. I believe that with today’s technology, we can do much better.” LELO says. It was hard in the beginning it looked even a little bit impossible to change such a simple object. But there it was, the solution. “The beauty of this idea is that it’s so simple.” LELO says. The material stays the same but they are going to change the structure of the condom. They need to give people confidence to use a condom. And make it easier for them to trust it. They are making use of todays technology to improve a century old product. The structurally different design, fights for safe and great sex. You can see and feel the difference.

USP_HEX_condoms_Desktop.jpg

Why it is cool?

It’s an eye-catching design. It delivers more strength, it’s thinner and sensation gives more sensation through the structure. For almost 100 years the condom nearly changed. It was invented in 1920, you can say it desperate needed a ginormous make-over. The HEX condom is very innovative. Because it’s the first major condom innovation in 70 years. The one thing that was very important is to make a condom people actually want to use. The condom will be for our generation. We need to start using it and be not that stupid to not use one for what kind of reason. Because like LELO says: “It’s not a matter of taste. It’s a matter of life and death – of protecting yourself or not.”

INNOVATION LAB

foodmarkt

The three biggest supermarkets in the Netherlands are the Albert Heijn, Aldi and the Jumbo. They al have 400 or more supermarkets they own in the country. Over the years some thins in their assortment have changed, they all have more biologic products and some even have a special department. But the most innovative one of the three is the Jumbo.

What is is?

Jumbo is launching their first lab, the Jumbo Innovation Lab. It’s sounds a little mysterious. It is a lab where Jumbo and their suppliers can come together to create innovative products. The lab exists out of different editions every year, with changing theme’s. Every edition a different supplier of Jumbo can be part of the Innovation Lab. What they need to do is send one or more ideas for products. The specialist from Jumbo will judge all the products and see if they are worthy to be in the shelving. After the suppliers survive that round, they go to the second round. The suppliers need to present their products in front of an expert panel. If they can convince the panel the assortment manager will make a plan to get is as fast as possible in the shelves of Jumbo.

Why is it cool?

Jumbo says: “Only by being innovative, we can continue to exceed the expectations of our customers. Therefor, we continuously search for new and innovative products to surprise our customers again and again. It also gives us tools to to keep up with the changing needs of the customers. We can not do this alone. That’s why we created this platform, so we can work together with our suppliers.” Jumbo is one of the most innovative supermarkets in the Netherlands. It’s not the first time they tried something innovative. In 2013 they opened their first food market. Know there are already three Jumbo food markets in the Netherlands, one in Amsterdam, Breda, Veghel and in 2018 they will add their fourth in Tilburg. It’s a concept of Jumbo, doing your groceries became an experience. The focus in the food market is good, healthy and cheap food. You have three options in the Jumbo food market, buy your ingredients, buy meals or eat there. And they are the first supermarket who put insect products in their supermarket. This was in 2014. They want that customers can come to their supermarket for all their groceries. If you visit Jumbo you need to look for buggy balls, buggy burgers and buggy crisps. Jumbo is a supermarket that does not lay the bar so high for people to go do their groceries there. It’s very approachable. In the future more and more supermarkets will come up with innovative ways to separate themselves from the crowd. But for now Jumbo is the obvious leader in this branch.

#41 FOUND FACES

What did it teach me?

It’s funny that when you are doing an exercise like this, you start noticing things. Because normally I don’t look around as much as I did when I started this exercise. This assignment made me feel happy in a kind of way and it made me laugh, because you see all the happy little faces in places you don’t expect. It thought me to look at my surrounding more. And not always look straight ahead, but sometimes also at the ground or in the air.

WOULD YOU DARE?

760x472-blog-post-v2.jpg

There are 195 recognized countries in the world. Where are you from? The answer most people will give you is that they are completely German, Turkish or Canadian. But we have not one origin. That doesn’t exist. Maybe you were born in the Netherlands. But what about your grandparents and their parents?

What is it?

Momondo brought a group of people together from all over the world with different nationalities. And started The DNA Journey. The question was; what would happen if you put a big group of people with different nationalities in one room? The were asked some questions and everyone was very proud and patriotic about their country.

“I think we are the best country in the world if I’m honest”

They were asked which nationality they disliked the most. The final question they were asked was if they would like to do a DNA test to see where their roots lays. There have been and still are a lot of wars and conflicts in the world. Most of the time it’s between different cultures and nationalities. We don’t accept someone for who they are so we start a fight. That’s the easy way to say it. Of course there is a lot more to it. Since 7th of January, when the headquarter of Charlie Hebdo in Paris was attacked, we have been dealing with some serious terrorist attacks and fear among a lot of people. It started with when a group of people who believed in the Islam radicalised. And didn’t accept the believes of others. The renamed their group the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, better know as ISIS. Since a long time people have a strong dislike to that part of the world. But maybe a little part of your roots lays there to. We need to learn to not judge so easily, because one group doesn’t stand for an entire nationality.

Why is it cool?

They were called back after a few days for their results. One by one they sat at a table and were told their outcome. When they heard their results most of them became very emotional. They found out that the nationality they said they didn’t like that much was also a little piece of them. Then they were asked if they would like to make a trip to all the countries. This video proves that nationality doesn’t matter. Maybe if this would be compulsory there would not be something as extremism. We’re all connected in one way and we all carry a piece with us from a different origin. So never judge someone by their nationality. Maybe it’s yours too.

“An open world begins with an open mind”

This is one of the most powerful movies I’ve ever seen. It’s so beautiful and eye opening. I would love if they gave everyone the chance to find out where they come from. The quality of life all over the world would be so much better if we knew that there doesn’t exist something as one pure race. Maybe the world would be a little more excepting and peaceful.

GO FASTER, GO HEALTHIER

In one of my previous blogs I mentioned that sitting is the new smoking. And that is a big problem these days. But one thing that’s across of that problem is the new fitness and foodies hype. It’s funny that we sit to much but the one thing you see everywhere is fitness.

What is it?

It’s a bike that exercises your entire body invented by Boyan Rista. Normal bicycles you only cycle with your legs. But whit Twicycle you can work the other half of your body at the same time. You move your handlebars the same way as the pedals. You’re working out your shoulders, biceps, chest, legs and abs at the same time. So of you have a day behind your desk in front of you, you would maybe consider taking this bike to work.

Twicycle-Chest-Pad-and-Chain-Ring-Cover-1020x610.jpg

There are a few more inventions that can help you move around in healthy ways. Like a bicycle/step invented by Bruin Bergmeester, you walk on a step the same way like you do on a treadmill and hold your hands on the steering wheel to chose a direction.

lopifit2.jpg

Or you can pick the halfbike founded by Martin Angelov and Mihail Klenov. It’s a bike without a saddle. You have to stand the whole time and move your legs on the pedals. They make you move faster in a healthier way.

X8A3155-2-1280x709.jpg

Why is it cool?

Most people tend to take the car or train when they need to go somewhere. What are you doing then? Yes, you sit, again. Like you’re going to do the rest of the day in your office. Let’s try a different way to move ourselves. The Twicycle, bicycle/step/treadmill and the halfbike are innovative ways to move yourself and they are not bad for the environment, so for the future they are sustainable. The Twicycle is more for the sportive people. But the other two are more likely to be used by the regular crowd. This may be a way to make movement more effective.
